Digital Enablers to Minimize Corporate GHG Emissions with KONE
KONE, a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry, has set science-based targets for significant reductions in its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the year 2030. In addition, KONE has pledged to have carbon-neutral operations by 2030. To reach these ambitious goals, we invite the best-in-class startups to co-create digital solutions with KONE teams to measure, manage and minimize KONE’s GHG emissions.

Data is a key resource in sustainability transformations. Knowing the CO2-heavy phases of a product’s life helps us make the best decisions for mitigating the emissions. This applies to both retrospective reporting and real-time optimization. That is why we are looking for digital enablers that can make our operations more sustainable through easily accessible data, displayed on dedicated dashboards. Part of the KONE carbon neutral strategy is offsetting the remaining emissions that cannot be mitigated, and data is needed for our impact assessments.
As being a leader in sustainability has long been a strategic target for KONE, we are taking actions across the whole supply chain and the lifecycle of our products. We are looking for solutions that utilize data from our manufacturing processes or our customers’ people flow processes to support our strategy.
In this opportunity, we are focusing on digital ways to help us gather, analyze and minimize our greenhouse gas emissions. As a majority of the emissions associated with KONE activities occur outside our immediate operations in the value chain a broad lifecycle approach is required for effective decision making. This includes our supplying, manufacturing, runtime and maintenance. Finally, because KONE is a global corporation with complex operations, the solutions should be easy to integrate into our current processes.
For this business opportunity, we want to co-create digital solutions which will minimize the GHG emissions resulting from our activities. We are looking for solutions that utilize data from our manufacturing processes or our customers’ people flow processes to support our strategy. The examples below represent some ideas that we have in this area, but please remember that your innovation can go beyond them.
Examples We’re Interested In
We’re looking for digital solutions, such as IT tools to quantify and model our GHG emissions, which are suitable for accounting and reporting purposes. We want to improve and simplify the way we collect GHG data from our operations and equipment. We also want to be able to provide accurate info about the GHG content of the equipment we sell (order bound LCAs).
Digital enablers to visualize the GHG emission metrics of our sold equipment to monitor and create user awareness about the usage of elevators and escalators (through monitors, dashboards). We are also looking at the collected data to identify gaps and areas to improve with further actions.
We are looking at tools to be used during the design phase such as advanced prediction and simulations of sustainability performances in the design process (e.g., BIM). We’re interested as well in real-time optimization of operations and equipment self-adjustment. Solutions that contribute to reducing CO2 emissions during equipment usage are welcome.
At KONE, our mission is to improve the flow of urban life. As a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry, KONE provides elevators, escalators and automatic building doors, as well as solutions for maintenance and modernization to add value to buildings throughout their life cycle. Through more effective People Flow®, we make people's journeys safe, convenient and reliable, in taller, smarter buildings.
Previous Experiences with KONE
Natalia RinconCo-founder and CEO at CHAOS
When matching corporates and startups, one of the most time consuming tasks is finding customers’ real needs. Combient Foundry is the first of its kind to connect startups with customers that have a real and concrete needs. If anything, I would recommend startups to forget about accelerators and focus in customer validation, this is something that Combient Foundry excels at. Highly recommended!
Ville HeikkiläVP, Sales & Marketing of Kaltiot
Combient Foundry’s offering had a great fit with our growth targets and there was a clear focus on getting a common project done.

We build a ground-breaking gesture control wearable company and are honored that KONE chose to go forward and collaborate with us to investigate how we can meet a real-life business need. Combient Foundry is really focused on bringing startups and world-leading corporates together to build lasting value!
Kristian RodeCCO at SHUTE Sensing Solutions A/S
We found a good match with KONE’s search for new approaches to predictive maintenance. Combient Foundry has been part of the whole process, from making it easy to join and screening propositions, to hosting the meetings and taking part in facilitating the scoping phase. We have a really good impression of Combient Foundry and their work to help new technology companies meet large industrial companies. In other words, it has been a pleasure working with them.
