Opportunity

SKF is a world leader in rolling bearings and related technologies, committed to advancing manufacturing processes through digitalization. As part of this commitment, SKF aims to minimize the negative environmental externalities associated with lubricant incineration in open bearings. Now, we are looking for solutions that create more value off the excess grease to address the environmental impact and expand the service offering for customers.

Opportunity overview

Currently, customers are handling the grease disposal phase themselves through conventional waste management practices, specifically incineration. It is classified as hazardous waste and provides no value for the customers, with the burning of the residual grease from bearing lubrication also posing negative environmental consequences. There is an opportunity for SKF to create value by offering a solution that addresses the disposal or reuse of used grease, either on or off-site, increasing the comprehensiveness of SKF service proposition. The goal of the requested solution is to expand the service offering while minimizing the environmental impacts. For example, solutions that focus on reconditioning the grease for reuse through e.g., conditioning processes, additives, batch treatments, or even conversion into other raw materials are of interest.

Summary of the requested solution

The sought-after solution aims to create value for customers by more effectively managing the disposal of used grease or extending its life span through reuse or alternative methods. Rather than only enabling the technology, the infrastructure of the solution should also be considered. Innovations in this function would contribute to reducing the CO2 footprint and offer cost savings in hazardous waste management. This would open up new opportunities to extend the service offering of SKFs business and have a positive impact on the environment & the brand.
