Our Open Leadership Positions

Opportunity

Today, SKF’s maintenance-free plain bearings rely heavily on PTFE as a solid lubricant to deliver low-friction, high-load performance without the need for external lubrication. However, the European Union is preparing a ban on PFAS substances, including PTFE. SKF are now looking to find new material technologies that can replicate the performance levels of PTFE’s to sustain the viability of maintenance-free bearings.

Opportunity overview

With the anticipated ban on PFAS, there is a pressing need for new materials that ensure continued performance in maintenance-free plain bearings. We are open to discussing a wide array of potential ideas with varying implementation complexity as long as they can meet the defined requirements, now or in the future. The opportunity is thus geared towards primarily identifying a functionality substitute, rather than strictly looking into direct box-to-box replacements. The solution must be possible to industrialize at the latest on a 5 year scale.

Summary of the Requested Solution

We are seeking PFAS-free solutions that can replace PTFE in low-speed, high-load plain bearings. The substitute must offer a comparable combination of low friction, high load-carrying capacity, and long life expectancy enabled by low wear rates. The solution should not rely on hydrodynamic lubrication principles, as the solution is aimed towards low speed applications. Even if the ban is delayed, there will still be market potential for PFAS-free solutions with an even higher focus on performance level and cost. A flexible material application technology is preferred to cater for application across several different bearing models. A successful solution will enable the use of more sustainable chemicals in bearing manufacturing and provide significant impact value.
