Opportunity

KION wants to move from today’s fragmented, partially manual check-in/check-out damage identification of its industrial trucks and related material-handling assets to a fast, mobile-first and scalable solution that can be used across the asset lifecycle—and that is explicitly designed for robust, future-proof integration into our SAP-anchored core processes and ERP landscape. The solution must not create another standalone front end, but instead lay the groundwork for secure, controlled write-back into SAP and related systems as we scale.

Submission deadline for the opportunity: April 7th

Opportunity Overview

KION is shaping world trade – globally, regionally, locally – and ensures that its customers’ supply chains reach their full potential: efficient, smart, sustainable, and reliable with real-time traceability and high delivery speed. Damage identification means a consistent, evidence-based assessment of the physical condition of our trucks and other assets, from minor cosmetic issues to safety‑relevant defects, and is a cornerstone for asset availability, customer communication, and commercial fairness across our business lines (e.g., long-term rental, leasing, used trucks, new truck sales).

Today, the process is still heavily dependent on who performs the inspection, where it happens, and which tools they use which is creating variability, rework, and avoidable follow-up issues when assets move quickly in and out of our network.

A key bottleneck is system fragmentation. Our current setup relies on separate tools that can read data from ERP but cannot reliably write back. This is forcing duplication of work (inspection documentation in one place, quotations/updates in another) and creating gaps in operational visibility. At the same time, we capture large volumes of photos that need to be stored, traceable, and reusable downstream (for example for marketplace listings), which adds friction when images and condition data cannot be easily accessed across processes.

Beyond documentation, we also see a need for monitoring and analytics: the solution should not only capture condition data, but also make it easy for KION to monitor, analyze, and act on this information (e.g., via dashboards or internal views) to support continuous improvement and operational decisions.

We are therefore looking for a solution that can be piloted in real operations: mobile, fast, and simple enough to use when there are many assets moving daily – and flexible enough to be used not only by our own employees, but also by external parties such as technicians, logistics providers, and subcontractors. Given current IT capacity and budget constraints, we expect the pilot to prove value even if some integration steps remain manual initially. At the same time, there must be a credible, architecturally sound path to deeper integration and scaling, including secure SAP write-back and adherence to KION’s data security and data integrity standards.

Your Opportunity with KION Group

Collaborating with us gives you the opportunity to validate and refine your solution in a demanding, real-world inspection environment where speed, usability, and evidence quality directly impact operations and customer outcomes. A successful pilot can open a pathway to broader rollout across multiple business lines and geographies, and position you as a long-term partner in modernizing our asset condition, damage documentation, and related workflows (including future ERP/process integration as scaling becomes feasible).

Examples we're looking for

Mobile-first, high-speed inspections for internal & external users

Fast, guided, and consistent inspections that can be executed in the field (yards, branches, customer sites) within a few minutes per asset. The same simple workflow should work for both internal users (technicians, branch teams, managers) and external parties (logistics providers, subcontractors) with minimal setup and training.

High-quality, traceable evidence and monitoring for fair and transparent claims

Robust handling of large photo volumes and condition documentation with structured metadata and a clear audit trail. The solution should make it easy to generate customer-facing evidence (what was delivered vs. what was returned), support commercial fairness, and reduce disputes and rework. In addition, KION should be able to monitor and analyze the collected data (e.g., via dashboards or reports) to identify patterns, trigger actions, and continuously improve processes.

Reusable asset data across lifecycle and channels

Captured images and condition data should be easy to reuse across processes (e.g., internal asset preparation, remarketing, marketplace listings) without re-photographing or manually moving files between tools. This includes straightforward access to and sharing of condition data and images across different KION systems and user groups.

Integration-ready, SAP-focused and scalable

The pilot must deliver value even with limited initial ERP write-back, but the solution must be designed from the outset with strong SAP integration in mind. This includes:

  • A clear, realistic integration path (interfaces, data model, governance) to avoid becoming another stand-alone tool.
  • The ability to support different SAP versions and setups (SAP-version agnostic, with a strong SAP focus).
  • Alignment with KION’s IT architecture, including data security, data integrity, and the principle that only validated data enters the ERP backbone.
  • IT and SAP integration feasibility, including controlled write-back, will be a key selection and go/no-go criterion before any larger-scale pilot.
