Opportunity

Stora Enso, a leader in sustainable packaging, is aiming to reduce virgin raw material consumption and the carbon footprint of their products and services. To achieve this goal, there is a constantly growing need to better maintain the value of packaging materials and products.

Efficient collection and maintaining purity are key starting points for increasing the potential re-utilization of materials and reusable packaging. Smart collection technology can be an effective way to achieve this.

Opportunity overview

As we move towards a more circular economy, there is a growing need to better maintain the value of reusable packaging and recyclable raw materials. A key obstacle for the utilization of both reusables and recyclables is contamination. Just a small amount of improperly sorted packaging can quickly destroy the quality of the desired stream or make the economics of separation and reutilization too unfavorable.

This problem can be addressed from a number of different angles. The miniaturization and improvement of robotics, computers, and sorting technologies has made it possible to relieve pressure on consumer sorting. Additionally, reverse vending machine deposit schemes have proven to be quite successful and are becoming more common-place in European markets.  We are looking for smart collection solutions for single-use and reusable packaging in the food service sector. The solution does not need to be one-size fits all and should consider a range of different situations including fast-food dining, takeaway, delivery, and events.

Your opportunity with Stora Enso

Be a part of the circular revolution in sustainable packaging by partnering with one of Europe’s leaders in the field. New regulations have left a giant hole to fill in the food service sector, and investments are being made in innovations capable of efficiently and effectively addressing the increasing needs for reuse and recycling. We are looking to collaborate and share our industry & commercial knowledge enabling your company further opportunities within the industry. Stora Enso is working to find and establish our role in these new value networks and a successful pilot would provide a great potential for future collaboration, strategic partnership and/or investment.

Examples we're looking for

Takeaway and Delivery

Take-away and delivery has become an increasingly popular format of food service globally, which increases the demand for effective collection of packaging in this area.

Fast-food Dining

The fast-food industry traditionally generates a lot of waste. We want to develop better methods of collecting the reusable packaging from those dining in fast-food restaurants.

Events

Events such as concerts, festivals or conventions are places where large amounts of single-use products are served. Improved collection of packaging waste in this area can also strongly contribute towards the circular revolution.

Part of the global bioeconomy, Stora Enso is a leading provider of renewable products in packaging, biomaterials, and wooden construction and one of the largest private forest owners in the world. We believe that everything that is made from fossil-based materials today can be made from a tree tomorrow.
