New growth opportunities available for best-in-class energy startups.

Opportunity

AstraZeneca, a leading global pharmaceutical company, is looking for new methods to minimize its carbon footprint by innovating in solvent production and supply chain. AstraZeneca is moving away from traditional petrochemical-derived solvents, which have a significant environmental impact, to discover cutting-edge solutions that will facilitate the shift from fossil-based sources to more sustainable alternatives in pharmaceutical product manufacturing.

Opportunity overview

To lower product-related emissions, AstraZeneca is interested in identifying and adopting technologies capable of converting CO2 into solvents for pharmaceutical manufacturing. While AstraZeneca has begun transitioning to the use of bio-renewable solvents, these do not fully meet all the needs of production and are even at times sourced through methods that may not be considered sustainable, such as excessive use of land, water, or energy. To address these gaps, we are seeking technology partners with the potential to generate scalable solutions able to convert CO2 into organic solvents such as acetonitrile or toluene with production scale quantities, providing a more sustainable and long-term alternative. This initiative will not only address a significant portion of AstraZeneca’s carbon footprint but will also set a precedent for environmental responsibility in the industry.

Examples we're looking for

Biocatalytic conversion

Use of bio-based catalysts or enzymes for conversion of carbon dioxide to solvents, paving the way for sustainable processes that are less energy-intensive and reduce the overall carbon footprint.

Chemical synthesis

Chemical reactions that can transform carbon dioxide into solvents.

Electrocatalytic reduction

With the help of electricity, electrochemically convert CO2 into reduced carbon products.

AstraZeneca is a global, science-led biopharmaceutical business whose innovative medicines are used by millions of patients worldwide.
