Husqvarna Forest & Garden offers a wide range of handheld tools for forests and parks, such as chainsaws, leaf blowers, and more. These tools are either electric, using lithium-ion battery cells, or gas-powered with two-stroke internal combustion engines, especially designed for professional use. We are now seeking innovative ideas to improve the energy efficiency of battery-powered handheld products. This would involve extending product runtime for a certain power level by investigating new blower technologies and trimmer gears.
Opportunity overview
At Husqvarna, we are committed to our science-based targets for reducing CO2 emissions. However, some working circumstances, particularly in professional use, still find gas-powered tools more convenient. The current energy density of lithium-ion batteries, both gravimetrically and volumetrically, is not sufficiently high. Carrying the required batteries for a full working day, especially for professionals, becomes unrealistic due to their weight.
Therefore, we are seeking innovative ideas to improve the energy efficiency of battery-powered handheld products. This would involve extending product runtime for a certain power level by investigating new blower technologies and trimmer gears. Potential solutions might include redesigning handheld blowers to optimize energy efficiency and new gear technologies and low friction coatings for energy-efficient gears.
Examples we're looking for
Aerodynamic design
Enhancing aerodynamic efficiency can reduce energy losses and improve airflow performance.
Low friction coatings
New low-friction coatings in gears could be a game-changer in terms of energy efficiency and runtime.
Product usability
Data-driven solutions guiding workers on efficient product usage can result in accomplishing more in less time.
